‘bed’ were taken by her during fieldwork in Rainbow Valley, a sacred site for the Upper Southern Arrernte people, the traditional landowners in the Northern Territory of Australia. This place, called Wurre, by the traditional landowners is associated with ritual rainmaking stories. In 1990, a reserve was established to protect the unique ecosystem comprised of sandstone formations, Indigenous&nbsp; Australian art, artefacts, and other sacred natural objects that surround a striking sandstone cliff. The central cliff, layered in iron-rich shades of red and ochre, stands in stark contrast to the lighter sandstone that turns pale yellow or gold as the late afternoon light settles, mirroring the site’s namesake; a rainbow. Nel’s photographs capture more than just these grand formations. They reveal an intimate landscape, focusing on subtle tracks and impressions left in the desert sand by the movements of animals and insects. Each trace left by these creatures forms a pattern on the desert surface, sometimes disappearing into its depths, leaving marks that invite speculation about what made them. The photographic images are both instant and ancient, capturing a place where industrial interference has been paused, allowing a rare instance of regeneration. The images encourage viewers to linger on the quiet details in the sand, the faint signatures of desert life that fade as the sands shift or the light changes. As one navigates the exhibition space, Nel invites the audience to unearth further minute details in a large floor sculpture. The details contrast against the immediacy of the photographic image and the camera’s moment of exposure, drawn out, sketched within the exhibition floor space over time in a slow stroke. These desert imprints are mirrored through careful interplay of sunlight, foam, and other materials. Sunlight filters in, marking large sheets of foam with subtle tonal shifts, echoing the natural rhythms of sunlight on desert sand. The foam sheets absorb and transform along with the movement of sunlight, creating an alternative, evolving archive as the space itself operates as a camera obscura, forming a layered document of exposure. This foam, flesh-like and unprotected, behaves almost as a body, vulnerable and receptive, absorbing light as it would an imprint or a memory. The foam, like a skin, is an archive of what it comes into contact with, collecting moments as if guarding against something that has already been lost. Its flesh colour gradually decays into an ochre colour throughout the exhibition period, morphing into the tone of the desert’s sand. Also present is the eggshell, made almost entirely of calcium carbonate crystals, forms a semipermeable membrane, which means that air and moisture can pass through its pores. The shell has a long history of use by humans as a container, often as a water bottle, but also for producing decorative artworks, morphing in its purpose between a utensil and a mark of mankind’s greed for harvesting natural elements. The presence of the foam recalls protective membranes, both natural and man-made, each one a fragile barrier between the interior and the forces of erosion, extraction, and contamination. Here, PVC objects, made from fossil fuels and coloured in black and red, remind us of extracted materials (such as oil or blood) transformed into something alien and toxic. These materials, manipulated from their natural origins, masquerade as different entities, echoing the themes of appropriation, extraction, and transformation that shape our relationship to the environment, highlighting a soul blindness that mechanised interventions have fostered through their disregard. The belief in the ability to communicate with the spirits of the deceased is woven into various aspects of modern art. However, such connections have often been met with condemnation from the public, yet despite this, spiritualism has left its mark on the women's movement, cultural politics, media and even forensic science. Nel's staged installations often serve dual purposes, not only for audience engagement but also as personal explorations. Each project is carefully developed, often based on extensive research into obscure stories or myths.PARABOL is an off-site collaborative project between Lydgalleriet and Kunsthall 3,14, another Bergen-based gallery. Lydgalleriet selects a sound work for the directional loudspeaker situated in Kunsthall 3,14's entrance hall. The works are curated in response to themes and issues relevant to the exhibition program at Kunsthall 3,14.These sound works are the visitor's first experience when entering the entranceway to Kunsthall 3,14, situated in the premises of an old bank. The material of the sculptural elements and the vertical blinds that divide the room is PVC. Vertical blinds made of this material are commonly found in cold rooms to separate the cold and warm areas. The photographs were taken during fieldwork in Rainbow Valley, a sacred site for the Upper Southern Arrernte people, the traditional landowners, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The sandstone layers in the main formation resemble colored stripes in a rainbow, with red orange shades of iron-rich sandstone creating a strong contrast with the lighter colored sandstone that turns pale yellow or gold in the late afternoon sun. Nel's photographs show tracks and impressions in the sand from various animals and insects. They make us wonder about what might have left these tracks, and what marks we leave ourselves. The installation divides the room in two, with a material that is usually used to separate a cold and warm room. This division is also emphasized by the strong contrast between the white walls and the black material. This can be interpreted as the division between dark and light, inside and outside, black and white - well known dichotomies. Or perhaps constructed dichotomies like nature and humans, good and evil, us and them. Or perhaps as an expression of the separation in the reserve where the exhibition's photographs were taken. Is the reserve preservation or storage? What is certain is that the scent from the vertical blinds that divide the room cannot be stopped but spreads everywhere.&nbsp; And the black curtain also functions as a mirror. From both sides. notes Advice of Ancestors Nel's staged installations are often produced as much for herself as for the audience. Installations where she takes visitors on a self-examination process by challenging our instincts and spontaneous reactions. Her projects are the result of extended periods of research into often lesser-known stories or myths, research that seeks to expand both Nel's and the audience's awareness of the universe in which we find ourselves. In the exhibition Mother's Ectoplasm, the interaction between the present and the past, the immaterial and the material, is explored, a result of Nel's fascination with the stories of ectoplasm. The term was first used by Charles Richet, a French physiologist who won the Nobel Prize in 1913. Ectoplasm, from Greek ektos ("outside") and plasma ("something shaped"), is a mythical substance that is allegedly transferred from a medium's body in connection with spiritualist sessions with the spirit world. According to the theories, ectoplasm is located in the transition between the etheric and the physical plane and therefore made it possible for the spirits to "take physical form" on/in this substance, which often came out of the medium's nose or mouth during the séances. Accounts from the early 20th century describe ectoplasm as a smooth material or about a substance that started as completely translucent and then gradually materialised. Some said that ectoplasm gave off a strong smell, while others told of a matter that glowed faintly, sometimes luminescent, and that disintegrated when exposed to light. With an artistry that has mutated from photography, Kobie Nel's installations always express an interest in the components of light and color, which is also evident in this exhibition where the daylight from the windows takes on an active role in gradually changing the color of the foam rubber material in the exhibition, and thus leave their mark on the installation; as in a Camera Obscura. The property of the foam rubber material also absorbs sound and contributes to a sensory experience as it subtly changes the acoustics of the room. In addition to subtle components such as sound and light, the exhibition consists of several other works and details in various materials. The main work in the exhibition, Mothers Ectoplasm, is a large glass work; a sunken headless female figure, activated by the light in the room so that it can also resemble a landscape, or an ice sculpture. In several places in the exhibition, traces of "ectoplasm" can be seen, as small hints of a spiritual presence.
